What's the deadline to enter?

Great question! The entry deadline is 5 PM on Friday, November 28, 2008. Don't forget. Write it down. Just don't miss it. It's a cool way to win cool cash!

Who is eligible to apply?

  • SCHOOLS: All schools (grades K-12) in the United States are eligible to apply. Projects must be sponsored by a formally recognized school group, such as a grade level, classroom or club. Public, private, and licensed home schools are all eligible to apply. Individual students (e.g., science fair projects) and previous award-winning projects are not eligible to apply.
  • COMMUNITY GROUPS: Community-based projects, such as those managed and operated by community service organizations, public recreation centers, 4-H clubs and other public, non-profit groups working to protect the environment at the grass-roots level.
  • Eligibility determination shall be at the sole discretion of SeaWorld and Busch Gardens.

Cool! So how do I enter?

It's easy. Fill out the Application Form, ponder the criteria listed below, then set aside some time for you and your group to create a type-written presentation of your project (written maximum of 15 pages...but less could be more, if you know what we mean!). You can even include videos, CDs, websites, photos, brochures, articles or products that your group has created. Get creative, but also make sure we know what you accomplished. Submit all materials (including the Application Form) to:

How will my project be judged?

Very carefully. Projects will be judged by representatives from SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, and representatives from our nine conservation and education partners:

These organizations work around the world protecting, preserving, and educating about our national resources.

What criteria will judges use to determine the winners?

Judges will be looking for the following:

  • Project goals, objectives and accomplishments
  • Project support/recognition
  • Impacts on students, school, community and the environment
  • Proposed use of award money (How will it benefit the project?)
  • Level of student/volunteer/citizen involvement and initiative

Additionally, judges will consider the following:

  • Originality/creativity
  • Support materials (photos, videos, articles)
  • General presentation of the application (organization, neatness)

VERY IMPORTANT!!

Make sure you prepare a defense for each of the specific judging criteria!

What if I have questions?

Please feel free to call 1-877-792-4332 (toll-free) or (407)-363-2389. Or utilize our Ask Shamu service - simply address the subject line as "2009 Environmental Excellence Awards".

If you are age 12 or younger, please don't email us; have an adult (parent, guardian, teacher, etc.) send us an email with your question/request/comment instead. See our Privacy Policy for more information.

What if our project doesn't get selected?

Selecting final winners is a difficult and daunting task. But to us, every group who protects and conserves the environment is a winner. For that reason, all applicants will receive recognition certificates.

Legal Stuff

All winners will be notified by mail. Any award notification returned to the sponsor or its agencies as undeliverable will result in disqualification and the presenting of that award to an alternate winner. Neither Busch Entertainment Corporation, nor any of its agencies are responsible for lost, late, damaged, incomplete, postage-due or misdirected entries. All application packets submitted become the property of Busch Entertainment Corporation, and none will be returned.

Winning groups must select three (3) individuals and one (1) adult leader to represent their group. The three (3) individuals and one (1) adult leader will be flown to a SeaWorld or Busch Gardens park. Video production crews may visit the winners at their schools to produce taped segments of the award-winning projects.

All group representatives will be flown round-trip, coach class from the gateway city nearest to their hometown. Transportation will be provided to and from the airport, hotel and park. Lodging accommodations will be provided for a maximum of three nights per person as needed. Winning groups that are unable to send representatives during the specific time will forfeit their entire award. Representatives will be required to complete release forms. In the event that representatives do not complete and return the release form prior to the trip, the group will forfeit its entire award. No substitution of awards will be offered and non-cash prizes may not be redeemed for cash value. The award money is intended to provide funding for the winning projects and may not be transferred to a third party or be used for unrelated purposes. By accepting an award, all representatives agree to permit BEC to use their name, voice, picture or other likeness for advertising, marketing, public relations or other promotional purposes in connection with the awards program or otherwise without further compensation. Federal, state and local taxes on awards, if any, are the responsibility of the group representatives.
